about

Welcome Poor Paddy Home (trad.)

A traditional song from the perspective of an immigrant, thinking fondly of returning to the land they left behind. I no longer remember where I first heard this song, but I’ve been singing it for years.

lyrics

I am a true-born Irishman
I’ll never deny what I am
I was born in sweet Tipperary town
Three thousand miles away

Chorus
Hooray, me boys, hooray!
No more do I wish for to roam
For the sun it will shine in the harvest time
To welcome poor Paddy home

The girls, they are gay and frisky
And they’ll take you by the hand
Saying “Jimmy, mo chroí,” won’t you come with me?
To welcome this stranger home

In came that foreign nation
And they scattered all over our land
The horse and the cow, the goat, sheep, and sow
Came into the stranger’s hand

The Scotsman, he loves the thistle
And the Englishman, he loves the rose
But Paddy, he boasts of the emerald isle
Where the dear little shamrock grows
